Plant Description
Acca sellowiana, more widely known as Feijoa, is an evergreen shrub or small tree celebrated for its unique combination of ornamental beauty and edible appeal. Native to the highlands of southern Brazil, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and western Paraguay, this species boasts thick, leathery, elliptical leaves with silvery undersides that create a striking contrast in the landscape. Its most dramatic feature is the bloom: four fleshy white petals with brilliant crimson stamens, attracting pollinators and admirers alike. These exotic flowers are edible, mildly sweet, and delicately crunchy. As it matures, Acca sellowiana produces oval, greenish fruits—highly aromatic with a complex, tangy-sweet flavor likened to pineapple, guava, and mint. The plant’s rugged form, coupled with its drought tolerance, cold hardiness, and dual purpose as both ornamental and fruiting species, makes it a rare gem in temperate and subtropical gardens. It’s a sculptural focal point for edible landscaping and attracts biodiversity with both blossoms and fruit.
