Journey to the Center of the Earth is an adventure-science fiction novel by Jules Verne, first published in 1864. The story begins with Professor Otto Lidenbrock, a German mineralogist, discovering an ancient runic manuscript that reveals a coded path to reach the Earth’s core through an Icelandic volcano. Alongside his niece, his reluctant assistant Axel, and a guide Hans, he descends through subterranean tunnels into realms of prehistoric life, vast underground seas, strange flora and fauna, and geological dangers. Themes include exploration, science vs. imagination, curiosity, the sublime power of nature, courage in face of the unknown, and human perseverance. The translation by Fruttero & Lucentini (1989) is notable for its clarity and readability in Italian, preserving much of Verne’s sense of wonder while making some cuts or smoothing of digressions early in the text.
