This work traces the history of pharmacy in Naples from its earliest roots in conventual spezierie (monastic medicinal shops) through the growth of urban artisan pharmacy workshops up to the 19th century. Chichierchia & Papa combine archival documents, iconographic materials, and architectural evidence to map how pharmacies evolved physically, socially, and institutionally. The book looks at how pharmacies were organized, who worked in them, how medicines were made, and how the relationship with the public and authorities changed over time. It also explores stylistic and material culture: furniture, signage, interiors, and how these reflect changing ideas of health, commerce, and professional identity within Naples.
