Quercus coccifera, also known as the kermes oak, is a small, evergreen oak native to the Mediterranean region. Quercus coccifera. typically forms a dense, shrubby mound with spiny-edged, dark green leaves. This tough species thrives in full sun and dry, rocky soils, making it well-suited to arid and Mediterranean gardens. Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos, a subspecies, can grow larger, sometimes forming a small tree. While slow-growing, Quercus coccifera wood is incredibly hard and dense, traditionally used for fuel and charcoal production. Its acorns provide a valuable food source for wildlife.
