Storia della Musica by George Dyson is a comprehensive survey of the development of Western music from its earliest stages to the mid-20th century. Translated into Italian by Laura Fuà, the book balances scholarly rigour with accessibility: it discusses the origins of music in ritual and folk traditions, the evolution through Gregorian chant, polyphony, the Renaissance, the Baroque and Classical eras, up to Romanticism and hints of modernity. Dyson does not limit himself to composers and works: he explores the relationship between music and society, examining how cultural, technological and economic factors shaped musical progress. The Italian edition includes illustrations, 49 full-page black-and-white plates, and a final chapter, “Uomini e macchine”, which reflects on the impact of mechanical reproduction (radio, disc) on music.
