The Mariner is a short static drama written by Fernando Pessoa in 1913 and first published in 1915 in the avant-garde review Orpheu. Set in a single night, three young women keep vigil over a deceased companion in a dimly lit room. To resist the dissolution of identity that dawn threatens to bring, they share dreams and invent imagined lives. The central dream is of a mariner stranded on a deserted island, who creates for himself a nostalgic homeland that perhaps never existed. The play explores themes of dream versus reality, identity, memory, and the fragile line between existence and illusion. With its minimalist stage action and highly lyrical language, it is closer to symbolist poetry than conventional theatre. Tabucchi’s Italian translation highlights Pessoa’s unique verbal music and his meditations on solitude and creation.
