Freud e la psicologia dell’arte (1967) by Ernst H. Gombrich is a compact but rich exploration of how Freudian psychology intersects with aesthetics and art theory. In three essays, Gombrich challenges the common view that an artist’s unconscious turmoil is the primary determinant of artistic creation. Instead, he argues that what makes unconscious ideas communicable is their alignment with the formal structures — style, shape, and composition — of the work itself. The book investigates how style and form act as mediators that allow deeply felt but unconscious impulses to become visible and meaningful. Gombrich draws on psychoanalytic theory but also on perception, visual psychology, and art history. The Italian edition features a translation (by Fiammetta Moronti) and includes illustrations both within the text and as plates. It is part of the «Nuovo Politecnico» series originally, and has been reissued in the Piccola Biblioteca Einaudi
