Entrata nella China de’ Padri della Compagnia del Gesù (1582-1610) is the Italian version (1983) of De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas, a foundational text of Jesuit missionary writings. It is based on the commentaries of Matteo Ricci, with additions by Nicolas Trigault, and presents a detailed, faithful account of cultural, legal, and social practices in Ming-China, as encountered by the Jesuits. It describes the early and often difficult beginnings of the Christian mission in China: the adaptation to local customs, the learning of language, the diplomatic and intellectual efforts involved. Ricci’s observations, enriched by Trigault, serve both as travel narrative and ethnographic treatise, offering insight into how the missionaries saw China, its institutions, religions, and how they attempted Christian inculturation.
