Issue 358 (November 1971) of Casabella, directed by Alessandro Mendini, belongs to a period of experimentation in Italian architecture and design. Under the heading “Case e casse” (“Houses and Boxes”), it invites reflection on domestic space, enclosed forms and the relationship between architectural ideas and everyday objects. The magazine situates these questions within the debates of the early 1970s, when conventional models of housing, production and visual culture were being reconsidered. As an illustrated periodical, it combines editorial argument with the visual language of architectural publishing. The issue is a historical source for the study of Italian design criticism and the changing meaning of the built environment.
